We partake of communion firstly and foremost in remembrance of the body and blood of Christ which was sacrificed on our behalf. Communion is a sacred ordinance that was established by Jesus Himself. It is an ordinance of memorial, remembering our Savior and renewing the covenant which each member has made in His name. It is not a dead ordinance, because it renews a living covenant and remembers a Living Savior.

Communion should not be used as a means of repentance, because repentance, and all those measures upon which it is conditional, should be employed before we come to the altar of our Heavenly Father. Communion is exactly what the word means; it is communion with God in remembrance of His Son. It is fellowship with the Divine which culminates, not begins, with the partaking of the emblems. We need to come prepared, just as we would prepare ourselves to meet God Himself. Fasting, prayer, and study are in order. Our preparation, along with the blessings which come to those who keep the Lord’s commandments, lay the foundation for a greater realization of the Holy Spirit.

It is an opportunity for us to reflect upon our own lives, rededicate them to Christ, and place ourselves again in the shadow of His mercy. There is nothing more meaningful, more sacred in the lives of men than the ordinances of God administered at the hands of His priesthood with authority.

As I prepare for the communion sacrament, I think of the exceeding love and mercy the Lord has shown me. I think of the glory, mercy, and victory of Christ, and how I personally may rise from a fallen state to that of a diligent servant. Through this ordinance, my commitment is renewed in all seriousness, with no small measure of dedication to Christ, and His bride, the church. And every ounce of seriousness and solemnity which communion inspires in me is met 3 fold with feelings of joy and thanksgiving, for the life of that Savior whom we remember therein.
