This hill marks the suggested location where Mormon, and then Moroni, hid the plates which were ultimately translated by Joseph Smith Jr. (using the Urim and Thummim) and called the Book of Mormon, which contains the fullness of the gospel of Christ. Joseph Smith Jr. first visited this hill on September 22, 1823, when the angel Moroni advised him to return each year for four years in order to receive further instruction. Moroni delivered the plates to Joseph on September 22, 1827. The prophet was 21 years old, and had just married his wife, Emma, on January 18th of the same year.
