Alvin Smith (Joseph and Lucy Smith's oldest son) planned the construction of this farmhouse to provide for his future family and care for his parents. He had apprenticed as a builder. By the fall of 1823 the frame was complete, but in November of 1823 Alvin suddenly died and the construction ceased for a time. Joseph Smith Sr. moved his family into the home in 1825, even though it still needed finishing work.
