Around 1818, Joseph Smith Sr. moved his family (wife & 8 kids) from Palmyra village to this location, where they built the log cabin just north of 100 acres they hoped to acquire. Joseph Smith Sr. and his family lived here approximately 7 years. In 1825, Joseph moved his family several hundred feet south to their new frame house which had been erected by their son Alvin. Hyrum Smith (brother of Joseph Smith Jr.) had arranged to buy 80 acres surrounding the log home, and in 1826 he moved into the log home with his wife, Jerusha Barden. In the spring of 1829, Joseph Smith Sr., his wife Lucy, and their small children moved back into the log home, with Hyrum and his family, until the fall of 1830.
