On April 6, 1830, the church was formally organized at the farmhouse of Peter Whitmer Sr., by the Lord, through Joseph Smith Jr. and five others. The first 2 general conferences were held here and the translation of the Book of Mormon was reportedly finished at the home of Peter Whitmer Sr. In the woods surrounding this home, an angel showed Oliver Cowdery, David Whitmer, and Martin Harris the plates from which Joseph Smith Jr. had translated the Book of Mormon. The house pictured was reconstructed in 1980.
